To celebrate British Science Week 2021, we are highlighting some of Study Group’s STEM pathway programmes and exploring the higher education and employment opportunities they provide for international students.

What are STEM subjects?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. A degree in one (or a combination) of these areas will provide international students with essential transferable skills required by employers. With jobs in science, research, engineering and technology industry-related fields expected to grow in the future, STEM graduates have the chance to access global career opportunities.

STEM degrees available in the UK

From prestigious, world-leading, Russell Group universities such as the University of Sheffield and Durham University, to modern, innovative and employability focused universities like Kingston University and University of Huddersfield, there are many reputable institutions where international students are able to study STEM related academic programmes.

If international students are looking for ways to access STEM UK higher education courses, they can opt to study a Study Group pathway programme. Study Group pathway courses are specially designed and university-recognised, providing international learners with the academic, English language and learning standards required to progress to degree-level and postgraduate STEM programmes at UK universities.

Study Group International Study Centres offer students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a supportive environment and time to become familiar with both the British education system and UK culture. Once students have completed their pathway programme and achieved the required grades, they can advance directly onto a higher education course of their choice.

By studying in the UK, international students also have the option to stay and work for up to two years after graduating, with the Graduate Immigration Route.

What Study Group STEM students say…

A student in a science lab

Since I arrived in the International Study Centre my English level has improved a lot, as has my science skills. We have a lot of practical classes and make a lot of experiments. It also enables us to communicate with our partners and learn how to work in groups.

Studied: International Foundation Year – Life Sciences at Lancaster University International Study Centre
Progressed to: BSc Biological Sciences at Lancaster University

A student in science lab

From the very first day I walked into class at the International Study Centre I thought it was the best group of people. Even after my International Foundation Year, we are still friends.

There is a huge difference studying in the UK to back home in Nigeria. No matter what course you want to study, I feel like there are more opportunities here. You can get a work placement, or you can get enough experience before you begin your actual job.

Ruth from Nigeria
Studied: International Foundation Year in Engineering, Computing and Science at University of Huddersfield International Study Centre
Progressed to: BSc Medical Biochemistry at the University of Huddersfield.
