Former US President Barack Obama visits Study Group partner the University of Strathclyde

Former US President Barack Obama recently visited Study Group partner the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland in the UK. The purpose of the visit was to meet with young leaders from around the world to discuss climate change. Leading international education provider Study Group has partnered with the University of Strathclyde since 2013 to offer university preparation programmes for international students.

In his first visit to Scotland since 2017, former US President Obama joined a roundtable hosted by The Obama Foundation in collaboration with Columbia University’s Climate School in the University of Strathclyde’s new Learning and Teaching building. During the roundtable, they discussed how this generation is leading the fight against climate change, and how young people can continue to trigger action and make their voices heard.

Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal and Vice-Chancellor at the University of Strathclyde comments:

“It was a privilege to welcome him to campus and outline how Strathclyde is contributing to tackling the climate emergency. He was engaged and interested in our long track record in renewable energy and in our ongoing focus on sustainability. He has a particular focus on the role that young people can play to tackle climate change.

“The Obama Foundation’s mission to inspire, empower and connect people to change their world is very much in line with our own Enlightenment roots as a ‘place of useful learning’ dedicated to making a positive difference to the lives of our students, our city, and the global communities we serve.

“We are honoured that the Foundation chose Strathclyde as the place to help amplify young people’s voices during COP26 – the voices that are so crucial to safeguarding the Earth for future generations.”

James Pitman, Managing Director for the UK and Europe added:

“We are delighted that former US President Obama selected the University of Strathclyde, a longstanding Study Group partner, to host this important roundtable discussion focused on how vital it is to equip young people and future generations with the skills and knowledge needed to tackle the climate challenges ahead.”
