International student return to Australia receives a boost

The launch of Quarantine Services Australia (QSA) is a significant development in the recovery of the international education sector from the COVID-19 pandemic and was welcomed by Study Group.

The QSA, is industry-led and funded, and was established to coordinate a multi-jurisdictional quarantine scheme to facilitate the return of international students and skilled migrants to Australia. It will work closely with the Department of Home Affairs and relevant state and territory governments to manage a network of quarantine facilities, above and beyond those currently operated by the Commonwealth and states and territories for returning Australians.

Alex Chevrolle, Managing Director for Study Group Australia and New Zealand welcomes this development:

“Since the start of the pandemic it has been rewarding to see the collaboration between education groups who have been actively engaging with a range of stakeholders for the safe and successful return of international students to Australia.

“The QSA gives us a clear path for the safe return of these students and much needed certainty to new and returning students. “There are thousands of international students desperate to return to their studies, to re-connect with their friends and to continue to enjoy the Australian lifestyle. And I for one cannot wait to roll out the welcome carpet.

“We are all aware of the significant economic benefits international students deliver to our education system and economy more broadly but let’s not forget the important contribution they make to cultural diversity which is so integral to the student experience and to Australia as a whole.

“International students sustain thousands of jobs and local economies where our universities are located, and local students benefit hugely from the connections and friendships made with international students.”

Study Group, as part of a joint venture, is one of a small number of shareholders in QSA. The shareholding entitles the joint venture to a seat on the QSA board. This will enable Study Group to contribute to the stewardship of the organization with the other seed funder representatives.

QSA will be an inclusive vehicle with industry engagement formalized through the QSA Advisory Council, which includes representatives from the Business Council of Australia, the Australian Industry Group, the National Farmers Federation, the Technology Council of Australia, the Minerals Council of Australia, the Tourism and Transport Forum Australia, Independent Higher Education Australia, and Universities Australia.
